2003-2009
JRM lineup from Autumn 2003:
Katarzyna Aszyk, first lead vocals
Tomasz Urban, fiddle, backing vocals
Mariusz Graczyk, accordion
Przemysław Wawrzyniak, pipes, flutes and whistles, bodhran and percussion
Michał Jankowski, guitar, flute, backing vocals
Witold Wojtkowiak, drums
Mariusz Sprutta, bass guitar, whistles, second lead vocals
2003/2004
The band have become aware of the need for change: shortening and simplifying the name, bringing in more musicians and more instruments,
and making recordings that would sum up the period since 1996, the year that the band's first and only
cassette came out The J.R.M. Band
"In the Pub". Because people were having problems pronouncing
the name The JRM Band (including respectable MCs), the name gets shortened to the three-letter JRM, which sound alike in most languages.
The personnel changes in 2003 are caused by Wojtek Jachowski's developing career and the concerts of his other group Liquid Lunch, as well
as Zbyszek Rybak's solo jazz-funk Sound Explorer project. Wojtek is replaced by singer Kasia Aszyk, and the fiddle
position is taken over by Tomek Urban. Additionally, one great musician joins the lineup: Przemysław Wawrzyniak, who has cooperated
with the band for many years, on Scottish pipes, whistles, flutes, bodhran and percussion.
In autumn of 2003 JRM starts working on new repertoire and arrangements, with a view to record a cd album. We'll know how it
turns out when it comes out ...

Carlos Núñez surprise visit in Poznań
[photographs]
World famous piper and flute player from Galicia in Spain Carlos Núñez paid a surprise visit in Poznań
recently. He had been in contact with us about a possible concert at the
Poznań Celtic Festival, and
called us on April 6. During Carlos' visit to Poznań we invited him to participate in our regular
rehearsals, organised various important meetings for him, took him to the
Museum of Musical Instruments
and the Maison de la Bretagne
in Poznań's Old Market Square and walked him around the town. At the day's
end Carlos met with traditional Poznań region piper Marian Wasielewski in the Fireplace Room of the
Zak Club
and heard his recital. This was followed by a close inspection of Marian Wasielewski's pipes, which,
incidentally, he had made himself.
Radio Merkury broadcaster Ryszard Gloger also participated in the meeting,
and he recorded a short interview with Carlos.
Later on, the JRM and Carlos Núñez had an impromptu session.
What a pity there was no tv crew around to film it. Bidding each other farewell the next day the two parties
did not rule out future common projects, which bodes well for the future.

Saint Patrick's week in Poznań
Saint Patrick's Day is a very special day around the world, but it is even more special for the fans of Celtic music. Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, brought Christianity to the pagan Celts around 1500 years ago. Whether you are Irish, or just wish that you were, remembering Saint Patrick on March 17th is a special thing to celebrate. Poznań is the place where Saint Patrick's Day has become Saint Patrick's week! Thanks to the organizers (Polish-Irish Society in Poznań, Irish Culture Foundation and Brogans Irish Pub), JRM takes active part in the nine-day celebrations (concerts, dance workshops, ceili, Irish cusine week, Irish fair). JRM plays four concerts and appears in a TV programme Saint Patrick's Day with father Norbert Kuczko - a Dominican from Poznań, Krzysztof Schramm - the chair man of the P-IS and president of the ICF, and dancers from Dance School ISTA Poznań: Katarzyna Bugajak, Michalina Katulska, Magdalena Mak and Justyna Piwońska. The programme is run by Edyta Król from TVP3 Poznań (producer). Screening: Satrurday, March 18th, TVP3 Regional, 22.05

The JRM Band thank the Irish Culture Foundation for inviting us to take part in the 2006 Saint Patrick celebrations. The band acknowledge the warm reception of the Śmigiel community: the decoration (the letters JRM on the back stage wall and the cloverleaf logo), the pastry, tea and coffee backstage and the lively audience, flowers and an invitation to the Śmigiel Day events in June 2006. This kind of thing doesn't happen too often. Let's give a big hand to Śmigiel! And let's extend Saint Patrick's blessing on Śmigiel!

JRM in April and May 2006
As of March 2006 the band has the following lineup:
Katarzyna Aszyk, vocals
Tomasz Urban, fiddle
Wojciech Jurgiel, accordions (button and keyboard)
Artur Grudziński, piano, keyboards
Przemysław Wawrzyniak, Scottish pipes, flutes, whistles, bodhran and percussion
Michał Jankowski, guitars, classical flute, whistles
Witold Wojtkowiak, drums
Mariusz Sprutta, bass guitar, vocals, whistles
It turns out that a repertoire inspired by Celtic standards (Scotland, Ireland, Brittany) relying heavily on the sound of typical Celtic instruments (pipes, flutes, whistles, bodhran, fiddle, accordions) and supported by spacious electronic keyboards and a rich rhythm section is appreciated by a more and more varied audience. JRM's April concerts take place among other venues at the KUBRYK Pub in Bydgoszcz - 07.04. [KUBRYK photographs]; ]; in the Little Cracow that is in Chełmno - 8.04. [Chełmno photos]; 12th time at the Bydgoszcz DRAMA 2006 Festival (KUŹNIA) - 8.04. [DRAMA 2006 photos]. JRM goes to Ciechocinek with an Easter concert for the guests of Pod Tężniami Sanatorium, and on the weekend 20-22.04 JRM plays for a whisky tasting party in Komorniki near Poznań - 20.04.; goes to the CELTIC Restaurant and Pub in Wrocław - 21.04. followed by a Scottish-Polish wedding in Jurków near Tymbark in the Polish Beskid Wyspowy Mountains - 22.04. [Jurków photos] and then play at the opening of the painting exhibition, picnic and banquet.
In their music the JRM don't neglect the Polish musical legacy. Their instrumental medleys include quotes from Chopin's preludes, mazurkas and nocturns. JRM's spontaneous improvisations and contact with the audience guarantee great enjoyment and artistic satisfaction for all even the most fussy listeners. It is therefore, as one would expect of Celtica, primarily fun and dance music, but at the same time, as the musicians themselves sincerely assure everybody, it is something to listen to.

Poles are a nation of fun lovers who enjoy festivities, traditions and old customs that go back many centuries, rituals, especially the magical and colourful traditions connected with Christianity and also those dating back to pagan times. A well-established Polish tradition in December is Mikołajki (St. Nicholas Day, December 6th). This day St. Nicholas brings small gifts to children and then on Christmas he comes back with presents for the whole family.

This the first time the band perform new tunes and songs, a mix of original compositions and standards (pieces scheduled to be featured on a CD album), for example: Anie Laurie - a Scottish song, Let the salmon swim free& Haste To The Wedding - two jigs: one written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych medleyed with a traditional Irish one; From Highland to Arabia - a reel in Shetland-Scottish-Irish climate with an Arab element, written by Mariusz Sprutta, a piece dedicated to Rory Dallas Allardice , presently leader of Next Flight Out, a Scotsman who was founding father of the original JRM Band back in the 90th and who has now settled in the United Arab Emirates; The Black Piper & The Golden Bird Story - a Welsh waltz and Breton style waltz written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych; Black Bird - a slip jig written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych, Cosa gan bhróga - a Gaelic song and instrumental in jazz-rock groove. The band perform in full line-up with two guest musicians: Diarmuid Johnson - Irish flutes, whistles; and Krzysztof Łangowski - electric guitar, sound engineering.
Christmas is a very festive season in Poland. Many customs, traditions and beliefs centre around Christmas Eve, a special day in Polish homes. Before Christmas many businesses organize parties for their employees. JRM together with a Poznań based Irish dance group Celtica perform twice (11.12. and 12.12.) at company parties in The Dubliner Pub, the first and the oldest Irish Pub in town. Two other important days for the Poles are the New Year's Day and New Year's Eve (31.12.), known in Poland as Sylwester (St. Silvester's Day). Sylwester begins the carnival - a period of parties and celebrations. This year JRM perform during an exclusive New Year's ball in POSNANIA Sport Club.

5.12.2008. - Reunion Concert
The famous whistle and mandolin player and songster from Scotland, legendary director of the English Language Centre at Adam Mickiewicz University in the 90's, one of the three musicians in the first lineup of the JRM Band in 1990, paid a special visit to Poznań recently. He had been in contact with the band since 1996 when we had our last concert together. We had never stopped thinking about a possible reunion concert in Poznań and met at last on December 5th 2008. Following Rory's arrival from the United Arab Emirates in the the morning, we spent a very pleasant day in Poznań, had lunch together, a rehearsal and sound check, visited the Maison de la Bretagne, and walked around Old Market Square and Rory's other familiar places in town. Later on in the Irish Brogans Pub, the JRM and Rory had a three-set concert featuring jam session elements and spontaneous dance moments courtesy of the Celtica, a Poznań based Irish dance group, supported by the formidable audience. We reviewed a broad cross section of our repertoire including the old and the new, traditional and modern, songs and instrumentals. Pity there was no TV crew around to film it. Fortunately we have photographs. After the concert Rory and the JRM musicians engaged in friendly conversation and whisky tasting and did not rule out future projects, such as regular concerts in Poland, Scotland or even UAE.

Recording finish geared towards producing a CD album
February is a time of few final sessions in the recording studio. The end of recording work is in sight. The name of the CD album is Cosa gan bhróga (without shoes, bare-foot, unshod).
The title track of the album takes you on a voyage of melodies, harmony, rhythms, songs and poetry not only through the Celtic strongholds of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany, but across the landscapes of contemporary Europe where the descendants of the Celts still live. The sounds reflect and recall the history of the migrations of people and music. It is a journey from ancient times to the present, a meandering trail through freedom and captivity, both physical and mental, peace and war, prosperity and poverty, with shoes and without shoes - Cosa gan bróga.
The CD will ultimately include 12 tracks. It is a medley of traditional pieces, the band's own compositions and Gaelic poetry:
1. Cosa gan bróga - Theme & Gaelic groove;
2. Let the salmon swim free & Haste to the wedding - two jigs' medley: a jig written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych and traditional Irish one;
3. Flowers of Red Hill & Congress reel - two Irish reels;
4. Annie Laurie - Scottish love song originally written by William Douglas, and amended by Lady John Scott (1810-1900) who altered the second verse and composed the third, a favourite of Scottish soldiers during the Crimean War;
5. The black piper & The golden bird story - two waltzes: traditional Welsh melody and Breton style piece written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych;
6. From Highlands to Arabia - reel-rock dedicated to Rory Dallas Allardice, a Scotsman who was founding father of the original JRM Band back in the 90th and who has presently settled in the United Arab Emirates - written by Mariusz Sprutta;
7. Cosa gan bróga - poetry read by Diarmuid Johnson;
8. Foggy dew - Irish air;
9. Return to Milltown & Lads of Laois - two Irish reels;
10. Black bird - slip jig - written by Krzysztof Ryszard Brych;
11. Whisky in the jar - one of the most widely performed and known traditional Irish songs. It is sung with many variants on locations and names. The song's exact origins are unknown. The song has been recorded by folk groups such as The Dubliners, The Pogues, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Seekers, The Highwaymen, Roger Whittaker, by rock bands like Thin Lizzy's (probably best well known version in the World) and The Celtic Rock Band, by David Grisman in a bluegrass cover, has been also covered by Gary Moore, U2, Smokie, Metallica (best known version in Poland and Germany);
12. Cosa gan bróga - final theme.
In February the band was also practing the repertoire and arrangements for the March concerts in Poland and the United Arab Emirates.
